One year after Delhi gangrape, Meira Kumar says nothing has changed

Indrajit Kundu  Kolkata, December 29, 2013 | UPDATED 18:13 IST On a day India marks the first anniversary of Nirbhaya's sad demise, Lok Sabha Speaker Miera Kumar said, inspite of the massive outrage across the nation, 'nothing had changed' so far.

Kumar, who is the first woman Speaker of the Lok Sabha was speaking to media in Kolkata today. On being asked if there were any changes in the past one year Kumar said, "where the security of women is concerned, everything is still the same"

It was exactly a year back on this very day the 23-year-old physiotherapy student had died after two weeks of battling against death.

Last December she was brutally attacked by a gang of six men on a moving bus in Delhi as she returning home from the cinema with her male friend.

Her death had sparked nationwide protests with thousands participating in candlelight vigils and prayers demanding sctrict punishment for the perpetrators.

Four of her attackers were convicted and given the death penalty in September this year by a fast track court, while the juvenile convict was sentenced to a detention centre.

The nationwide protests led to a national debate about women's rights and safety in the country and forced the Government to pass a tougher new anti-rape legislation.
